The Softwood Lumber Dispute â€Å"In August 1987, after fifteen months of negotiations Canada and the U.S concluded another round of talks, and finally agreed on a free trade agreement. It was then Prime Minister Brian Mulroney and President Ronald Reagan who had launched the trade initiative at their convivial 1985 and their main focus was lowering trade and tariff barriers. This was cast as a path to increased prosperity for both nations. This is also known as the Ottawa summit. However the negotiating was not easy. Substantive differences did not prove amenable to quick resolution. The Canadian Prime Minister was however in for a disappointment as he had placed a considerable amount of stakes on this deal and hated to see it finished off. The Canadian negotiators were in for a difficult deal that was how to move the bargain forward without losing their side off the deal. By September, the Canadian government was preparing a strategy for resolving the talks-one way or another. F ailing that, the Canadian cabinet would have to determine how and when to acknowledge the breakdown in the negotiations. This case is designed to encourage discussion of both the Canadian and US negotiating postures and of how each nation's assessment of the other helped to define its negotiating stance. Another case, US-Canada Free Trade Negotiations I (C16-87-785.0), involves US preparations for the negotiations, with specific focus on obtaining congressional approval for the talks† (http://www.ksgcase.harvard.edu/case.htm?PID=862) â€Å"Canadian officials had given quite a palpable response to the imposition of duty, which was around 19.3 percent, countervailing tax on imports of Canadian softwood lumber with much tub-thumping and hand wringing. The softwood lumber dispute is however straining relations between Canada and the Unites states. Canada is a major supplier of softwood and the united state is a major market, which it is at risk of losing. Therefore the achievement of Canadian objectives remains elusive at best. Living in a culture that has a different language, different customs, and a different work style is exciting, and an once-in-a-lifetime experience. It can give your career a significant boost as well as broaden your horizons. But â€Å"global† assignments, as many companies call them today, have a downside, too. It’s true that some parts of the world are dangerous for Americans and other visitors, but in most global postings the challenges have more to do with different cultures and different ways of doing business. The good thing about accepting a foreign assignment: builds the resume when you are invited to take an International Relocation you should take it because there may be no other experience that adds to your resume more, become a multi-cultural pro when you take an International Assignment it gives you an opportunity to add to your multi-cultural tool belt. Every day you will be challenged by cultures different from your own in the workplace. Learning to manage people of different cultures than your own is an increasingly valuable asset today. While advantageous for some, international assignments aren’t right for everyone. Only you and those close to you can decide if you want to live and work in a different country, and if so, at which point in time. If success on your career path requires international experience and you are unable to take on an international assignment at this time for any reason, there are other ways to gain global exposure. These might include short-term assignments in other locations, jobs that involve cross-border interaction, or a task force made up of a global team. There’s a downside to working abroad: The difficulty of being away from friends and family. It’s especially hard if you move overseas alone, problems adjusting to living in a foreign country. Many people have a difficult time dealing with cultural differences, extreme disorientation. It can take several days or more to get used to living and working in a different time zone, a chance of getting sick. In tropical climates, malaria and dysentery are common. Different health care and sanitation practices must be considered, you’re out of touch with the home office. Many changes can occur in the space of two or three years, such as new management, mergers and acquisitions, and promotions, technological change. Technology in foreign countries can be years behind the United States. It could take several months to digest all the changes when you get home, your company may be reluctant to have you return. Keeping an experienced employee in an overseas post is often easier than training a replacement, and returning to your old job could be difficult, both for you and your coworkers.

as I sit and think about my life, I think about the things I was taught. I didn’t have a conventional life as a child. However, I’m sure to the outside world their perception was different, as it is to many people that have an outside view of others. As a mother I wanted to be sure to teach my children the things I was never told and I had to learn on my own. Tragedy Through Misreading in William Shakespeares King Lear Shakespeare’s tragedy, King Lear, portrays many important misconceptions which result in a long sequence of tragic events. The foundation of the story revolves around two characters, King Lear and Gloucester, and concentrates on their common flaw, the inability to read truth in other characters. For example, the king condemns his own daughter after he clearly misreads the truth behind her â€Å"dower,†(1.1.107) or honesty. Later, Gloucester passes judgment on his son Edgar based on a letter in which he â€Å"shall not need spectacles†(1.2.35) to read. While these two characters continue to misread people’s words, advisors around them repeatedly give hints to their†¦show more content†¦Gloucester’s tragic flaw is his inability to perceive honesty and truth with his eyes. Though Lear possesses this same negative characteristic, he consciously makes the decision to condemn Cordelia because she will not provide him with the immediate gratification he anticipates. Lear misreads the only daughter who truly honors him because he is on a power trip. Lear wants to hear Cordelia speak about his greatness and her limitless love for him. When Cordelia responds â€Å"shall I never marry like my sisters,/To love my father all†(1.1.102-103) the king willfully interprets this statement as an insult and becomes outraged. After Lear condemns Cordelia, he banishes Kent, his most trustworthy supporter, because of his boldness to defend Cordelia. Basically the king is eliminating anyone who is not acknowledging his authority and power. At this point in the play, Lear portrays the classic Shakespearian theme that some power corrupts but absolute power corrupts ultimately. Like Gloucester, Lear’s tragic flaw is his inability to read truth but his actions are spawned from different emotions. Shakespeare creates the notion that these tragic characters will listen to someone else and correct their reading errors.
